As people of faith, we say that we believe in the basic tenet of our tradition, “love your neighbor as yourself.”  Yet, our busy lives easily create distance between that great commandment and our relationship to those who are the poor and the most vulnerable in our world.  Our faith continually challenges us with questions as to how we can take action in today’s complex world.  Many times, we find ourselves so frustrated and unable to act.

This fall as part of an ecumenical group from our Capitol Hill neighborhood, we have created an opportunity to come together as community to answer that call with a new JustFaith program.  Through weekly meetings, readings, videos, conversations and experiences about challenging topics, fact-to-face encounters with the poor, and an investigation into the intersection of spirituality and Christian activism, this 8-month program offers an opportunity to explore these questions and our Christian social justice tradition.

As mentioned this would be an ecumenical group of about 15 people, space is limited.  We are hoping to have participation from our Capitol Hill United Ministries churches and agencies.  We will certainly be presented with an opportunity to walk our talk as we journey together.

We are offering two sections. One is scheduled for Mondays (7-9 PM) at Trinity United Methodist Church. The other is for Wednesdays (9-11 AM) at Capitol Heights Presbyterian Church at 11th and Fillmore.  The first day of the program is scheduled for the week of October 18th.   Choose the time and day that works best for you.

We are so fortunate to have Ken Whitney and Redden Green as our program facilitators. These two people feel passionately about faith and action and have walked the talk.  CHUM and Trinity United Methodist will be supporting the program and the participants in any way we can.

The cost of this program will be primarily the 13 books that will be needed for reading, reflection and discussion.  These books can be purchased new or found used.
